iphone 6If you liked the model snaps of the iPhone 6 yesterday, have I a treat for you today.

Expect many snaps that purport to be of the — allegedly waterproof and packing near field communication tech — iPhone 6 but these look pretty good to me.

In the image below you can see what is said to be Apple’s next smartphone pictured next to the iPhone 5s and the HTC One (M8).

iphone 5s iphone 6 htc one m8Taking a handful of salt, but just in case these do represent the real deal, it looks as though the iPhone 6 would be shorter than the recently released HTC flagship (probably due to the Taiwanese phone’s BoomSound speakers at either end).

There’s also a set of images comparing said iPhone 6 with the current Apple flagship, the iPhone 5S, from all possible angles.

I’ve included two of the images below, but there’s more to see here.

iphone 6 and 5sThere are quite a lot of changes all of which have been well documented already such as the speakers, and repositioned power button.

Is this the real deal? What do you think? Do you prefer the curvy looks? How about a wrap-around screen?

Let me know your thoughts below :)

Cable Giant Comcast To Acquire Time Warner Cable

So much for Comcast's proposed merger with Time Warner Cable being good for your internet service. The cable giant's David Cohen tells investors that he expects "usage-based billing" (that is, data caps with overage fees) to reach all Comcast customers within five years. While he's not saying exactly when or how this would expand beyond the cap system's limited existing footprint, the company would gradually increase caps as demand goes up to make sure that the "vast majority" of users don't bump into it. Cohen doesn't anticipate having complex plans that force people to worry about their usage, but he warns that it's hard to make long-term predictions. "Five years ago I don't know that I would have heard of something called an iPad," he says.

Cohen isn't convinced that caps will come up in the Time Warner deal's approval process, as they reportedly have "nothing to do with [the] transaction;" but they may come up as the FCC drafts its new net neutrality rules. However, it won't be surprising if opponents to the merger (and possibly regulators) bring up the possible restrictions in spite of the executive's opinions. While caps are officially meant to reduce network congestion, critics argue that they're frequently intended both as revenue generators and as weapons against online services that compete with TV. Comcast may have to show officials that it won't use data limits to protect its traditional cable business -- and that won't be easy when the corporation is already getting flak for its connection deal with Netflix.

surface pro 3 releaseIt has not really been a secret that we’re expecting to see the  Microsoft Surface Pro 3 launch this month, along with its smaller buddy the new Surface Mini tablet but more news adds weight to the rumours.

According to a recent report from The Verge, Microsoft will announce two new Surface tablets at a press event next week, the Surface Pro 3 and the Surface Mini which has already popped up on Amazon.

Microsoft are holding a press event in New York next week on the May 20th which is related to Microsoft’s Surface tablets, although the company has yet to reveal any details on what they plan to announce.

The new Microsoft Surface tablets are rumored to come a new power optimised Intel Haswell processor.

The Verge spotted a reference to a ‘Surface Pro 3 camera’ on Microsoft’s support site, which gives more weight to the rumour that the new Surface Pro 3 will launch next week.

The Pro 3 is expected to use the latest processors from Intel and a 2K resolution screen. While this new tablet is only a rumor right now, fans of Surface here in the UK can now get your hands on the Surface Pro 2 with LTE. This tablet actually launched in the US a while ago and has only just now landed in the UK.

As soon as I hear more firm details about the new Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and Surface Mini, including some actual pictures of each device, I’ll let you know.

galaxy s5 primeSamsung will launch the new Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime in the UK next month, and now I have how much it will cost you.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime will go on sale in the UK in June and Geeky Gadgets has word of how much it will cost you to go Prime time.

According to their source the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime will retail for £649 in the UK. This is obviously for the SIM free version as you’re likely to get a hefty concession for the up-front cost when getting one on a monthly contract with one of the UK carriers.

Samsung currently sells the Galaxy S5 for £579 in the UK unlocked, so the £649 price for the S5 Prime seems fairly reasonable considering the handset will come with a range of uprated bits ‘n’ bobs.

The Galaxy S5 Prime will feature a 5.1-inch QHD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, and will be pushed along by a quad core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 805 processor in the engine-room.

Other rumored specifications for this premium version of the Galaxy S5 includes 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built in storage which can be further expanded by another 128GB thanks to the microSD card slot.

The high end Samsung Galaxy S5 will also come with a front facing 2 megapixel camera, and a rear facing 16 megapixel shooter. Naturally it will be running Android 4.4. Kit Kat skinned by Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.

Predictably, BlackBerry is working on a new QWERTY handset. According to the BlackBerry 10.3 SDK, the device will rock a square screen with a 1440×1440 resolution and pixel density of 453 DPI — that’s significantly higher than the somewhat arbitrary definition of a retina display.

BlackBerry has long said that they are not giving up on making handsets. With that, the company has also remained committed to the QWERTY form factor that has so far defined the company’s products.

Just yesterday, BlackBerry unveiled its latest full-touchscreen device called the Z3. The $200 device is decidedly entry-level on the specs page, but that’s BlackBerry’s goal; make something with a touchscreen that competes with low-cost Android devices for a market where it has already ceded a lot of ground to cheap hardware running Google’s mobile OS. BlackBerry used to count Indonesia as one of its most important international strongholds, and the Jakarta is an attempt to renew the siege to get it back.

Likewise, BlackBerry will likely reintroduce a QWERTY handset destined for BlackBerry holdouts and niche markets that still rely on BlackBerry’s enterprise services. Of course BlackBerry failed to reveal any other details about the upcoming device, but chances are its launch is immanent now that devs have the SDK.

In other news, BlackBerry emailed me today to in part announce the availability of a SnapChat clone on BlackBerry World. So they have that going for the platform.

BlackBerry Confirms Development Of An Upcoming QWERTY Handset With A Crazy Pixel Density

Google has made a lot of progress on its self-driving car project in the past few years, and just this week it began ferrying journalists around Mountain View in the autonomous vehicles. The company shared with us a heap of information about the project, its history and how it came to be in light of its recent advancements – and while it’s been hard going, you might be surprised at how far they’ve come, and just how successful they’ve been in their testing to date.

Google cites the 1939 World’s Fair ‘Futurama’ ride for GM as the inception point of the passion for self-driving vehicles, but the self-driving car project kicked off at Google in 2009 under Sebastian Thrun, with an initial focus on the relatively uncomplicated (but still monumental) task of negotiating freeways. The past year or so has been focused on tackling city street driving, with improvements including pedestrian and cyclist detection, sign reading via improved computer vision, and more advanced software models to predict a full spectrum of possible roadway incidents.

Screen Shot 2014-05-14 at 1.02.48 PMTo build a comprehensive model of city driving involves painstakingly slow development, however; Google says that it’s adding new streets in Mountain View every week, but that’s just a single city – presumably tackling new urban centers, and dealing with varying municipal and state driving laws and different driver behavior will involve additional work as well. Google also says it needs to do more work with situations that humans handle via social signals (including hand gestures, head movements and eye contact) like 4-way stops, lane changes and merging with other traffic.

Google’s self-driving cars have other super powers that we mere humans do not, however, and that probably has something to do with the project’s 0 percent accident rate in its five-year history – yes, the autonomous vehicles have been involved in exactly no incidents or collisions over the course of the trial. For instance, a Google car can “see” 360 degrees, using a combination of lasers, positional and orientation sensors, and radar. All of this info is fed to a processor that checks it for accuracy and relevance, and then creates a detailed map of the cars surroundings and process that for event data in real-time. Take a look at how the information gathering and decision-making process, including resulting action, happens step-by-step in the graphic below.

Screen Shot 2014-05-14 at 1.04.00 PM

The entire purpose of the self-driving car project is to make it possible for cars to react to their environment with 100 percent accuracy, avoiding the 93 percent of accidents that happen on the road each year due to human error. So far, it has managed around 700,000 autonomous miles driven, using specialized Lexus SUVs modified with Google’s sensor, processor and imaging tech. It’s still a long way away from being something a majority of us use everyday in place of our current cars, but Google is in talks with automotive manufacturers to begin work on production vehicles, with a projected time frame of around six years before the first (limited) model could come to market. It’s a distant dream still, but far less so than it was 75 years ago at the World’s Fair.

Google’s Self-Driving Car Project Is A World’s Fair Fantasy Turned City Street Reality

Apple hasn’t said anything yet about any iPhone 6, nor will it until the fall (or whenever it actually announces it) but that hasn’t stopped the Internet’s collective imagination and curiosity from creating countless mock-ups of what the next generation of Apple smartphone will look like. Just this morning, we heard about how the iPhone 6 could have 1704×960 resolution for its display, which is 3x resolution compared to the original iPhone device. Here’s a roundup of the best guesses regarding the look and build of the new device to date.

Signs, including case designs being shopped on the usual wholesale Asian ecommerce websites, suggest that we’ll see a larger iPhone with a slimmer design, sort of like a shrunk down iPad mini. 9to5Mac has provided videos using physical mockups of gray and gold designs of the supposed iPhone 6, built based on specs reportedly received by case manufacturers with access to Apple’s upstream supply chain.

These show how it compares directly to a wide range of iOS devices, so you can get a good feel about how it should shape up to the iPhone 5s and any other Apple hardware. That is, if this even turns out to be an actual thing that’s real and not just the fever dream of a thousand Apple fanboys.

The high quality versions in 9to5's videos represent the reported 4.7-inch version of the upcoming iPhone, but there’s also now a physical version of the 5.5-inch version of the iPhone that’s also supposedly in development. It’s a crude, fan made 3D print, but it does provide some notion of how an Apple phablet might look compared to other gadgets designed for normal human hands.

iphonemock4

On the less likely end of the spectrum, frequent Apple device mockup maker Martin Hajek has provided a concept of what a Nano-like iPhone 6 design might look like. It’s basically a Sony Xperia Z2 in a lot of ways, though, and almost definitely not what we’ll see in a final, actual shipping product from Apple.

iphone6concept1

If you’re in the mood for more fantasy, there’s this dual-screen iPhone 6 concept that shows what an iPhone with a screen on both the front and back might look like, complete with a 4K resolution display. The dual screen comes via a slide out back panel, which will never ever ever happen. Not in a million years, not if the dinosaurs came back from the dead.

Apple’s next iPhone will almost certainly make its official debut in September, as it has for the past few years, and we likely won’t find out what it’s definitely going to look like until then. But anticipation is a key part of each new hardware refresh cycle, so for the time being, let these visions of sugarplum fairies dance in your head and think about what’s on the horizon from Cupertino.
