Nike was said to be shutting down its FuelBand department on the heels of layoffs on Friday, signalling a significant exit of the wearable fitness device market by one of the more prominent companies involved in the space. That’s not quite true, however, according to information provided to Re/code by the company. There were indeed some layoffs, Nike confirmed, but it also said it’s still committed to the Nike+ FuelBand SE, plans new color options for the gadget and should support it and continue to sell it for the foreseeable future.

Nike plans to continue with its original plan of adding to the Silver and Rose Gold ‘Metaluxe’ edition Nike+ FuelBand SE models with addition colorways. It doesn’t mention anything regarding hardware beyond the current generation FuelBand models, however, which could indicate that its commitment to its wearable devices extends only as far as this particular gadget. There has been some speculation that Nike plans to shift focus to software in the future, and possibly support the hardware efforts of others, including Apple. Apple is rumored to be working on an iWatch with health tracking features, and its CEO Tim Cook sits on Nike’s board of directors.

Nike Says The FuelBand Isn’t Dead, New Color Options Coming

Nike's line of FuelBand wearables have been a popular choice for those looking to keep tabs on daily activity, but Fuel tallies haven't meant much outside of the company's own apps. Now, with the launch of the Nike+ Fuel Lab in San Francisco, the athletic outfit is looking to expand through partnerships and collaboration. Through the initiative, the Fuel platform will soon team up with "industry-leading companies" that include the likes of MyFitnessPal, RunKeeper and Strava. According to Nike, this means that over 100 million new participants will have access to its "common universal currency to monitor and evaluate" all kinds of activity. "The demand for simpler data-powered experiences is soaring, and all-day sensing is more available on mobile and wearable devices than ever before," said Nike VP of Digital Sport Stefan Olander. "Nike is committed to broadening the use of NikeFuel through collaborations with industry leaders to create smarter products and services." Unfortunately, there's no word on when the integration will begin just yet.

NikeFuel integration is coming to MyFitnessPal, RunKeeper and Strava

Apple is planning to launch the iWatch in Q3 2014 – probably September. This is according to a new report that states suppliers Quanta Computer, TPK and Richtek have been given orders to manufacturer specific parts for the device, which will see the Cupertino company enter the wearable tech market in a big way.

The news comes from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, which has previously been hit and miss with Apple rumours but what makes the latest whispers more interesting is that all the suppliers mentioned are based in Taiwan – EDN’s home ground – and have been linked with the iWatch before.

The paper says that Quanta Computer will handle manufacture of the smartwatch itself, while Richtek will supply the chipsets and TPK the touchpanel sapphire glass screens.

Furthermore, a report claims that Flexium Interconnect, Zhen Ding Technology Holding and Career Technology have all dispatched their flexible PCB samples (printed circuit board) to Cupertino for validation.

This report goes on to mention fairly large amounts of money these suppliers are willing to invest in order to ramp up production capacities for 2014 (Zhen Ding with $100 million, Flexium Interconnect with anywhere between $49.6-66.12 million and Career Technology with about $33 million) as far as Apple’s products are concerned.

Sunburn detector

One of the most interesting rumours points to the iWatch including a UV light exposure sensor. What this will do is measure the amount of exposure you’re receiving from the sun. According to the source, the device will include a special chip to measure this:

These chips measure UV exposure to aid those with elevated risk of sunburn or just a general concern about excessive sun exposure, and we believe they may be of appealing to OEMs looking to differentiate in a crowded market. To that end, while these products have seen little public hype thus far, we believe SLAB has a win in Apple’s upcoming iWatch (late 2H14 or early 2015).

Could we be seeing a double-header release with iPhone 6?
